Cornerstone Youth: Raise ‘Em Right

“I’ll hear a line or a couple notes and I’m full blown Disney karaoke in the car or grocery store.”

You know those songs that someone could start singing a line or two from and even though you haven’t heard that song in years all the words come flooding into your head and they won’t stop until you finally give in and belt out the lyrics while people all around are staring at you? For some its a good Disney song from their favourite movie, or a radio classic, or that annoying commercial. I have many songs like that. I’ll hear a line or a couple notes and I’m full blown Disney karaoke in the car or grocery store.

Growing up I was in a kids choir at my church and we sang a lot of different songs and now as an adult, those songs pop into my head at some of the most random times. The one that comes up frequently is a song that was based on Proverbs 22:6. The song’s message is “Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it.” As a kid, this was a fun song to sing and annoy my parents with, mostly because it was an extremely repetitive song. Now as an adult raising children myself this song is a reminder of my purpose as a parent. Every day I’m presented with ways that I can show my children what way they should go, what things they should do, how they should behave. This song that’s been ingrained in my head is a tool that God uses to remind me that I’m to be intentional about my time raising my children now so that when they are grown they will know what is right and be able to do it.

What Sunday School song or church song pops into your head?
